Why eBay sometimes ignores your US address

This is the eBay-specific trap. When a seller enrols a listing in eBay's international shipping programme, eBay routes the item to its own domestic hub and takes over the export leg, quoting you its own international shipping and import charges to Jamaica. Because eBay knows your account is Jamaican, it can apply that route even though you entered a Florida address — and you end up paying eBay's international rate for a service you did not want, on top of having a forwarder. The fix is to buy from listings that simply post domestically within the United States.

• Read the shipping section of the listing before bidding — an international programme quote to Jamaica is the warning sign.
• Set your eBay address to your AirDrop US address before you search, not at checkout.
• Prefer listings offering plain domestic US postage, and use eBay's item-location filter to search US sellers.
• If a listing insists on quoting international shipping to Jamaica, the cheaper move is usually a different seller.

Every seller is a different shipper

Unlike a single retailer, eBay has no central warehouse and no consolidated dispatch. Five wins from five sellers are five independent packages, packed to five different standards, arriving on five different days, and there is no way to ask eBay to combine them at source. Used goods and what customs makes of them

eBay is where the used and refurbished market lives, and that changes the customs conversation. Duty is assessed on declared value, and on eBay the declared value is whatever the individual seller writes on the customs paperwork. A seller who under-declares to be helpful creates a mismatch between the paperwork and the eBay record, and mismatches cause holds and questions rather than savings. Keep your eBay order confirmation and payment record for every purchase — it is the document that resolves a query fastest. Packages valued over US$100 C.I.F. may attract duty.

Auctions, timing and storage

Auctions add a timing wrinkle nothing else does: you can win five things in one week and nothing for a month. Because items arrive whenever each seller gets round to posting, an eBay consolidation can sit part-assembled for a while, and how long you can leave it depends on the storage window your tier allows. If you are bidding across a long stretch, plan to ship in batches rather than waiting indefinitely for one perfect consignment.

Returns run through the seller, not eBay

An eBay return is a negotiation with an individual seller, under whatever returns policy that seller published, and many small sellers publish none. Combined with the cost of shipping an item back to the United States, this makes a bad eBay purchase harder to unwind than a bad purchase from a large retailer. Buy from established sellers with strong feedback, read the returns policy on the listing before you bid, and pay through eBay so the buyer protection you do have still applies.

Getting the address to the seller intact

Your AirDrop address line 2 carries a routing token in the form METHOD-TIER-ACCOUNT (for example AIR-RUBY-10493). That token is how a box gets matched to you. Copy it from your dashboard exactly — a package that arrives without it has to be identified by hand, which is the single most common cause of a delayed package. On eBay your address is passed to the seller, who often copies it by hand into their own postage system — and a hand-copied address is where a routing token gets abbreviated or dropped. Make sure the token is in your eBay address before you buy, and if a seller messages you to confirm the address, send them line 2 exactly as your dashboard shows it. Freight is charged by weight, per package. If a box is light but bulky its dimensional weight (length x width x height, divided by 139) may be used instead of what the scale says. A fuel surcharge applies per package, and Jamaica Customs may assess duty on packages valued over US$100 C.I.F.
